CQQ #3: Discipline in Public...?

How do you handle that kind of heat in public?

Thank you, HonnieBunnie007, for suggesting this topic!

Discipline can be a tricky and controversial subject in itself, particularly when it comes to methods for handling misbehaving children. Add setting to the fray, and perhaps it gets trickier, sometimes even uncomfortable.

A number of parents handle discipline poorly in the privacy of their home. If handled poorly elsewhere, disciplining children in public could possibly be misinterpreted as child abuse at worse, or at the very least cause some heads to turn and stare. Embarrassment may perhaps ensue for the child or parents (or even the public).

Curious Questions to Consider:

Should parents discipline their children in public?

If so, what would be the proper way to give discipline to children in public?

What are some good methods for giving healthy discipline in general? Does setting matter how this discipline can/should be given?

Is it ever okay to spank misbehaving children as discipline? If so, how should this be handled?

Could disciplining a child in public have repercussions, such as scarring them emotionally? Or would it help them to consider their behavior to avoid embarrassment?

  1. I spanked all my kids and always used a wooden stick. I would always explain why and give a hug afterward. They even decorated the stick, which was a large paint stirrer from home Depot. In public, if they misbehaved, which was super rare, usually a stern look was enough. I do believe public discipline can be appropriate if it is earned but should be rare and never in anger

    1. Thanks for sharing. I've never seen that approach to discipline before, so I find this interesting, especially the part where the kids decorated the stick. Sounds like your children were able to respect your authority.

  2. I have one son James (who is now 36), but my wife Sue and I only rarely disciplined him because he was (is) such a good boy. The only rare public discipline would be a reminder to be respectful to others/us. Otherwise any discipline would consist of a private conversation where we would let him know what he did wrong and then encouraged him to improve his behaviour.

    1. Thanks for sharing. Glad to know your child was well-behaved and respectful of your authority. I agree that discipline should always encourage the child to learn and make positive decisions to improve their behavior.
