Are you looking to set some big goals in order to achieve something big this year? Well In this video we’ll be going over 5 steps for how you can set some God-sized spiritual goals.

Welcome to The Current Christian, where we give disciples the tools and tips they need to grow their ministry. If you’ve been looking for a channel that can help you grow spiritually, mature relationally, or help you enhance your skills as a leader, then you’ve come to right place, and if you’re new here, consider subscribing.

Everyone’s got a dream of where they see themselves in the future. Often the more ambitious the person, the more ambitious the dream. But if you want to make those God-sized dreams into reality, then you have to begin by planning things out.

In Proverbs we read that…
"The wise give thought to where they are going, but the fool gets lost." Proverbs 14:8

So let’s give some serious thought about those spiritual goals as we dive into these 5 steps.

Step 1: Pray for Purpose.
When it comes to setting goals, you want to make sure you’re setting a goal that God has given you. If a goal is not from God then you’re simply settling for less and wasting your time.

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17

"Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails." Proverbs 19:21

Accepting any goal besides the one God gives would be like accepting Gum instead of Gold. That’s a terrible trade off. So before setting any goals, take time to pray and ask God to provide you with one. If you don’t have a firm goal, don’t worry, God will give you one…

"If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." Matthew 21:22

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:6

Step 2: Test the Goal.
Once you feel you have a goal, you should test it to make sure it is truly a Godly Goal. You’ll know a goal is from God if it…

1) Doesn’t contradict God’s character or the Bible,
2) Too big for you to do on your own.

A vision that comes from God is always something that can only be achieved if God is with you. Moses knew he could face Pharaoh only if God was with him (Exodus 3:11-12), Joshua knew that the Israelites could go into the promised land only if God was with them (Numbers 14:6-9), and Gideon knew he could save Israel only if God was with him (Judges 6:33-40).

So, if there is a goal that you know can only be achieved with God’s help, then it’s most likely a goal that was placed there by God himself.

Another great way to see if a goal is from God is to ask those who are wiser than you.

"Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." Proverbs 15:22

"Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety." Proverbs 11:14

Therefore, I encourage you to share your goals with people in your church so they can offer you some feedback.

Step 3: Write out the Goal.
I know this part might sound basic, but it’s fundamental. You need to have a clear idea of what the goal is in order to reach it, and you need to physically write it down.

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize..." Philippians 3:14

"Those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win." 1 Corinthians 9:24

The quickest way to win a race is to run straight for the finish line. And in order to reach the finish line, you need to know where it is. The same is true for goal setting. When you write out your goal, you are defining where the finish line is. When you have the end in mind, you are able to know if you are heading in the right direction.

Step 4: Work with a Friend.
When it comes to reaching your goals, studies have shown that you are more likely to achieve them when you’re doing them with a partner.

This means you should either…
* Work on the same goal with a friend,
* Or hold each other accountable to achieve your individual goals

"A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken." Ecclesiastes 4:12

"If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble." Ecclesiastes 4:10

Moses had Aaron, David had Jonathan, Mary had Joseph, and Jesus had the 12 disciples. They wouldn’t have been able to achieve all they've done if they had done it alone.

Last but certainly not least, we have...

Step 5: Trust God.
When you have a God-sized plan, that means you will have some God-sized problems. Problems that we cannot overcome on our own. When we trust God with our plans, we can know that…

God will keep you safe.
"Fearing people will hold you back, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe." Proverbs 29:25

God’s timing is good.
"But those who trust the Lord will find new strength. They will be strong like eagles soaring upward on wings; they will walk and run without getting tired." Isaiah 40:31

God will help us reach the goal.
"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." Proverbs 16:3

God will take care of all our needs.
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:33-34

There you have it, the 5 steps to setting a Spiritual Goal:
1. Pray for Purpose
2. Test the Goal
3. Write out the Goal
4. Work with a Friend
5. Trust God

So I want to know…
